WHAT IS A SITCOM AND WHAT ARE ITS ORIGINS?

WHAT IS A TV SITCOM?

As you could know, the term Sitcom is an abbreviation of Situational Comedy. This word is employed to define a specific type of comic, TV or radio series which shares the same characteristics between them.

The argument of most situational comedies is the involvement and reaction of the characters to different comic and amusing situations. They are normally common conflicts of the daily life, with which you, as viewers, will enjoy. For this reason, situational comedies differ from other series in the direct participation of the public; maybe you are familiar with hearing the recorded laughs during the daily transmission.

The number of main characters in these series are not more than 6 and their personalities play an important role for resolving those conflicts. For example, you could know who is Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory, who is very manic and always consider himself better to othe people.

WHAT ARE THEIR ORIGINS

Now that you know what is a sitcom, do you want to know what are their origins?

Sitcoms are known for being an American TV format, which have been developed from the very first sitcom of I Love Lucy (1951) to the common TV sitcoms that you can see nowadays in the TV, as Friends or Big Bang Theory. Situational comedies arose to the origins of the TV itself, where they had a great success in the United States.

Despite of this, and as you can see, the great boom of situational comedies has taken place during the last 10 or 15 years. Also, if you are watching a tv sitcom, you can connect theatre with them, since the stage sometimes is very similar.
